The contactor: switching power safely
A contactor is a heavy-duty, electrically operated switch designed to make and break the large currents that motors draw. When energised by a control signal, it closes its main contacts to connect the motor to the supply; when de-energised, it opens them. Contactors handle the switching that ordinary control devices cannot, allowing a small control signal to command a large motor safely.
Overload protection
Motors can be damaged by drawing excessive current for too long, whether from a mechanical jam, an overload, or a fault. Overload relays watch the current the motor draws and trip if it stays too high for too long, disconnecting the motor before it overheats and burns out. This protection is distinct from short-circuit protection provided by fuses or breakers; the overload guards against sustained excess, not sudden faults.
Starters bring it together
A motor starter combines the contactor and overload protection into a coordinated unit that switches the motor and protects it. Direct-on-line starters connect the motor straight to the supply, simple and effective for many applications. Other starting methods reduce the initial current surge for larger motors, easing the strain on the supply and the driven machine. The right starter depends on the motor size and the application.
Reliability and maintenance
Because starters switch heavy currents repeatedly, their contacts wear over time, and worn or pitted contacts cause unreliable operation and heat. Checking for signs of overheating, ensuring connections are tight, and replacing worn components keep the system dependable. An overload that trips repeatedly is warning of a real problem, whether a genuine overload, a failing motor, or an incorrect setting, and deserves investigation rather than simply being reset.
